Gautam Gambhir was Indian cricket team left handed batsment who helped us get 1st ever World Cup T20I trophy,but do you know the biography of Gautam Gambhir,his age,personal life,and his journey of becoming a politician.Lets talk about this :-

Born :-

Gautam Gambhir was born in New Delhi,his father name is Deepak Gambhir who managed a textile business while his mother Seema Gambhir is a housewife.Gautam also has a younger sister named Ekta Gambhir.Gambhir completed his schooling from Modern School and was graduated from Hindu College,DU.Gautam used to stay at his maternal house Pawan Gulati and also considered him as a mentor.Gambhir was only 10 years old when he started playing cricket.Gambhir was selected for NCA (National Cricket Academy) in 2000 Bangalore.

Start of Domestic Career :-

Although Gautam Gambhir started his journey in 1999-2000 but It was 2002 when he got the actual recognition as he hit 218 run against Zimbabwe from Board President XI,which later got him place in the International cricket. 

Entry In International Cricket :-

It was Gautam Gambhir's successive two double hundreds inning which made him a strong contender for the opening slot as compared to others in 2002.He got a chance to make his Debut in TVS Cup against Bangladesh where he went scoring 71 runs and also rewarded as Man of the Match in 2003.He scored his maiden century 103 off 97 against Srilanka.Having said that his start in Test Career was not so impressive as he got chance to play against Australia in Border-Gavaskar Trophy in fourth and fifth test where he only scored 3 and 1 respectively in 2004.The wait for century for him ended in 2004 against Bangladesh after that he was only able to score 97 against in Zimbabwe,in the middle he was part of test but hasn't played any special one which is why he was dropped from team India.

Although he wasn't part of Indian Test squad,but he was a part of ODI team between 2005 and 2007.Since opening slot,middle order was set for players like Virender Sehwag,Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly,this was also one of the reason of him not being the part of World Cup Squad.Not getting into World Cup squad pinched Gambhir to the extent that when he picked for India's tour of Bangladesh in 2007 he went on scoring his second International century after selection.

Gautam Gambhir was always someone who believed in performing consistently while playing for India.Player like him doesn't beleive in scoring runs and putting numbers in his records,for him it was always special to be playing for India.

Due to his consistency he lated got selected for T20 World Cup in 2007 which India later went on winning in South Africa beating Pakistan in the Final and Gautam was the one who top scored for India,hitting 227 runs at an average of 37.83 which included three half centuries,out of which one came against Pakistan 75 off 44 balls.

During India visit to Australia he was bound to miss the test series due to shoulder injury in 2007-2008 but he came out strongly in Triangular series when he scored 102 against Srilanka in a rain washed match and later in the same tournament scored 113 off 119 balls against Australia.It was Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar performances which made India win CB series for the first time ever in Australia and he was the highest run scorer with 440 runs.

Gambhir has already cemented his place in team India,and after seeing his consistency he was once again given a chance in Tes matches which he loved the most,also while While speaking to NDTV in an interview,how he prepared himself to become a test player while he was preparing for an overseas tour for New Zealand as an opener .

After making his comeback in Test,he proved his worth as he went on scoring 858 runs with an average of over 61 in just 7 seven matches in an year of 2008 while opening his batting partner Virender Sehwag.Out of the 858 runs he scored in that year also includes one of the double century he hit against Australia in Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

After so many good performances,his best was yet to came and It came very early when Indian Team toured New Zealand in 2009 one of the finest knocks he every played and we ever saw was standing almost 5 sessions with over 430 balls and he went on scoring 137 runs which proved him "The Wall"and also got Indian team to win the series with 1-0 in 41 years.In overall he scored 445 runs in 6 innings with an average of 89.

The World Cup for Gautam Gambhir :-

When you talk about World Cup 2011,you start to recall Shastri's commentary and dhoni's hitting six into stands those words still can be heard in your ears and refreshes the memory but Do you remember the contribution of Gautam Gambhir?Yes Gautam Gambhir was the man who anchored the innings and gave the required start to India which eventually helped India to chase the needed total.Gambhir made sure that he sticks to other end while wickets kept on falling from strikers end.
While speaking to ICC in an interview he said he was just 2 year old when India lifted the world cup and his only dream was to life the World Cup ever since he started played cricket.

Also not scoring 100 in world cup he regrets it but what he regrets the most is not to be able the one who could finish till the end.In final match against Srilanka He went on scoring 97 off 122 balls with a good partnership with Virat Kohli earlier and later with MS Dhoni of 109 runs.
While talking to NDTV in an interview "He also said when you are picked to play for the country,you are selected to win the world cup not only put the numbers on your record career."

Gautam Gambhir took retirement from all formats of the cricket on December 2018,although he played a domestic match on 6th December 2018 against Andhra Cricket Team where he scored 112 in his final innings.

IPL journey :-

Being a delhi player,he was chosen to play for Delhi Daredevils in the first season for a price of $US725,000 and his first season he became the second higher scorer with 534 runs in 14 matches.In 2010 season IPL he was promoted as a captain and was the only player from Delhi Daredevils to score 1000 runs.

 In 2012 Gautam Gambhir was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in $2.4 million and made the skipper.Under his captaincy KKR was first time reached into the play-offs and Champions League T20.He also helped KKR in winning the IPL title in 2012 defeating CSK by 5 wickets and he was the leading run scorer in that season.Gambhir got KKR winning its second IPL trophy in 2014 beating Kings XI Punjab by 3 wickets.He also led KKR to playoffs in 2016-2017 and scored most runs while playing for them. 


It is said that in 2018 he was bought by Delhi Daredevil in 2.8 crore as he refused KKR to retain them citing he wanted to finish his career from the same team where he started and he was appointed as captain of DD but later stepping down from captaincy as he thought his performance was not good and he wasn't justifying the price he was being given.

A Glance on his new journey of Parliament :- 
Gautam Gambhir joined Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) on 22th Mar.2019 and took the oats as Lok Sabha MP on 17th June 219 after winning the elections.

In Test :- He scored 4154 runs in 58 matches 104 innings with 9 hundreds,1 double hundred and 22 half centuries,highest score being 206 averaging 41.96.

In ODI :- He scored 5238 runs in 147 matches 143 innings with 11 hundreds, and 34 half centuries,highest score being 150 averaging 39.68.

In T20I :-  He scored 932 runs in 37 matches 36 innings with 7 half centuries,highest score being 75 averaging 27.41.

In IPL :- He scored 5238 runs in 154 matches 152 innings with 36 half centuries,highest score being 93 averaging 31.01.

Gautam has been married to Natasha Jain on 28th October 2011 and is blessed with a daughter named Anaiza Gambhir born in 2017.

If there is one dish he swears by is Rajma Chawal and also he likes dahi bhalla and butter chicken.His favorite actor is from Hollywood Sylvester Stallone and favorite movie is Rambo series.Gambhir likes listening to Jagjit Singh Songs and his favorite destination is United Kingdom.

Controversy :-

In one of recent controversy,Gautam Gambhir claimed that he missed out his hundred due to dhoni and also blamed him for not sticking to rotation policy.
He said,he was asked by Dhoni he was asked to score three runs and get his hundred while he was playing on 97,due to this his concentration was lost as he was only focusing to chase the target set by the Sri Lanka,he went on saying,had me not thought about my personal record and only thought about chasing the target,he would have had 100 on that match.
He also claimed that Dhoni self made the rotation policy and later went on paying all three formats in must-win games which means violation of the own policy.

  • He scored most runs in 2008-09 season i.e. 1269 runs. 
  • He scored most ODI centuries by an Indian in 2008 year.
  • He scored most Test centuries by an Indian in 2009 year.
  • He was the first indian and overall 4th cricket to have hit 5 centuries consecutively in 5 Test matches.
  • He became the first Indian to score more than 300+ runs in 4 consecutive Test series.
  • After Viv Richards,he is the second cricket to have hit 11 fifties in 11 consecutive 11 Test matches.
